THIS WEEK - Springfield - Zoning Board Decision

Future for Baltimore Pike???
Springfield Zoning Board Hearing
RE: Billboards
March 24th, 2011
7:30 pm
50 Powell Road
So is this the end? The decision whether or not billboards on Baltimore Pike will be allowed will be revealed by the Springfield Township Zoning Board this Thursday.
For the many Springfield residents who put forth so much time and effort to make their voices heard in support of their commissioners and in opposition of billboards and for the many other townships facing this same battle, who showed their neighbors support, the end may seem like a relief. But in truth, this battle will most likely continue to the Appeals Court at the County level, then the State.
Please plan to continue to show your support of your commissioners and your opposition to billboards by attending this hearing. Make the commitment to your hometown to stay aware and on top of this issue. Coverage of the last hearing

Two Accidents in Two Weeks at Two Proposed Billboard Locations

Billboards by nature are meant to grab the drivers attention, right?
Expert in Human Factors, Jerry Wachtel, in his testimony for Haverford Township stated, after evaluating the locations, that West Chester Pike is already a very challenging roadway with many curb cuts, Septa buses stopping and going, pedestrians, many other on premise signs..... In his opinion, Billboards were not appropriate at the proposed locations because of the existing challenges. Basically unnecessary additional distractions.
Case in point, 2 accidents in 2 weeks at 2 of those locations: Smile by Design across from Manoa Shopping Center and United Check Cashing next to Trinity Lutheran Church.
